If you haven't read Dr. McNinja, then there's a good chance that you're using your internet all wrong. The increasingly bizarre adventures of a doctor who is also a ninja has delighted fans across the net with its consistent balance of epic action and ridiculous comedy. The Leaky Wiki talks to Chris Hastings- writer, creator and all round nice guy- and asks him questions with flare and aplomb.
TLW: What does the term ‘internet famous’ mean to you?
CH: It means that strangers write me emails to correct my spelling errors, but I don't get free drinks when I go out.
TLW: When did you first realize you wanted to write and draw comics?
CH: I wanted to draw comics since I was probably 12 or 13. As I grew older and discovered I wasn't terribly good at anything else, it became more inevitable.
TLW: Dr. McNinja started as a college art project for you- did you ever think it would go so far?
CH: I went to the School of Visual Arts, and was in the cartooning program, so I was making plenty of comics. I took a summer class between Junior and Senior year to keep myself from getting rusty, and the assignment was just "Make a 15 page comic." and I decided it was a good time to try out this doctor ninja character I had been kicking around in my head. I had a pretty good idea that this character was my "thing" once I put it online and got a good response. It was also the first thing I'd written that felt like it really clicked for my sensibilities. So yes, I actually really did have faith in Dr. McNinja.
TLW: If there were ever a Dr. McNinja movie (and if there's any justice there will be) who would you cast in the titular role?
CH: I really like Sam Rockwell or Will Arnett for Dr. McNinja.
TLW: You have been elected as King of all Presidents by a cowering populous. What is your first decree?
CH: Mars Colony. Get on it.
TLW: Where do you go for your internet comedy (other than the Leaky Wiki obviously)?
CH: Besides the bounty of other webcomics out there (links to which are on my site), I really enjoy all of the podcasts at Maximum Fun.org. I like the usual suspects of internet humor, The Onion, College Humor, Cracked...
TLW: Where do you see yourself in five years time?
CH: In five years, I hope to be continuing to make enjoyable and probably funny stories in one medium or another. I will likely not be doing Dr. McNinja anymore, just because I don't want to burn out on it.
