Gerard Holmes had five years added onto his contract after attempting to jailbreak his iPhone six days ago.  Holmes was already halfway through serving out the terms and conditions of a two year contract with AT&T at the time.

Carl Ronstadt, Gerard’s roommate, currently living out a six month contract with Verizon, told The Leaky Wiki that, “[t]he pressure had really been getting to Gerard.  The lack of freedom to do what he wanted with his own property… it got to be too much for him.  He only had a year left, and I really think it’s unfair the way they’re treating him.”

Many privatized phone service networks have been coming under scrutiny for what many consider to be unfair practices.  Veronica Hernandez, a lawyer for the non-profit Phone Phreedom, says that cases like Gerard’s are not uncommon.  “They are concerned about money, not providing an adequate service.  And they force people into longer contracts just to line their own pockets.”

AT&T refused to respond to offers for an interview, instead replying with a form letter stating that, “AT&T is not guilty of any wrong-doing.  As a business, our goal is to make money.  We cannot be held responsible for the actions of our customers, nor can we be blamed when we enact our legal right to do whatever we want to them.”

Gerard Holmes was unavailable for comment due to a lack of cell reception.
