TOPIC: Leaky TV

Leaky TV 1 year, 2 months ago #3205

I had a thought. There's plenty of people over at Cracked who've tried to get their video shown but have failed miserably. I know because i'm one of them. That means that people have already created a shitload of comic material that they now can't really do anything special with. If the Leaky Wiki launched a platform, they'd be able to promote their video and The Leaky Wiki would get more content, meaning an extra reason to frequent the site.

Even if people have already got their stuff on, say, newgrounds, there's no reason they wouldn't want an extra bit of publicity from The Leaky Wiki; especially if they retain intellectual ownership.

I realise that hosting video would be a bitch for bandwidth, but if you did one now and again that was just an imbed code from a youtube or vimeo hosting, would it work? I suppose they could submit them like an article, just by pasting the imbed code? I don't know, man, I'm not a freakin' scientist.

Just a thought, like I said. And, I may have a backlog of my terrible marital arts cartoon series becoming available soon... so there's that.

If it's funny and still relevant to the site in some way I don't see why not.

For the record, I think that the idea of Leaky T.V is a good one but as well as comedic opportunities, incorrectly executed, it would bring with it a plethora of opportunities for it to fall flat on it's face.

Take the Onion's News Channel for example. The writing is great, the acting is great but do not forget that what makes it so effective, so close to the bone (and satirical) is the fact that it is filmed, recorded, directed, presented and edited with a huge budget and fairly well matches the output of Fox or CNN.

To mimic such a thing with a bootlace budget, domestic camcorders, poor sound quality and amateur actors all filmed in a bedroom or garage lit with bedside lamps would not just be futile as an excersise but could tarnish the reputation, or at least perceived quality of TLW.

I think that the only way to do it would be to do something in a format different to and not in direct competition with the A.V Satire News Market.

Maybe a good stepping stone might be podcasts. Less technical hurdles to have to leap but even then, it is not just the quality of the writing to consider but having excellent sound quality, links, jingles, actors etc etc etc....

Sorry, I don't mean to be the DoomSayer but y'know....

That's true Matt, but we could raise the number of votes that videos need to assure that we only publish the highest quality material.

Matt's right about original video production. I have some experience in this myself, and even at the low end you need dedicated skills and hours. Nowhere near as spare-time-friendly as banging an article or a cartoon out.

However, I do think giving people an opportunity to showcase their own work is a good way to get a foot in the door video-wise.

I know you guys don't want to compromise the core ideal and feel of the site, and I totally agree that The Leaky WIki should be first and foremost a USG fake news site. It's a great format and workable too. However, I think you can branch off without ever having to jeopardise your look, feel and ethos.

If you're worried about looking less like the news companies you're parodying, then don't. I come from England, and there's not a newspaper left here that prints solely news. The line between news outlets and media outlets is becoming increasingly blurred as people try to maintain sales.

Think of it this way- your video platform could be the equivalent of the TV guide you get in most papers (and even on some news sites.)

Although I believe originally produced video content is the future, in the mean time and until the sites hit rate warrants it, a mutual promotional relationship with original content producers could be a great way to prep the way and increase interest in the site.

Man, that was long entry. Sorry.

I agree Steve.

Despite how it might have come across I am not against having employing video as a medium but just wanted to highlight the potential downsides that I think should be considered.

I have some experience of video production...

Unreasonable rage against dolphins and uncomfortable Batboy serenades. Nice!

I made a video that might be suitable for Leaky TV, it's a dubbing of a news report. Let me know what you think.

Last Edit: 1 year, 1 month ago by Julienne Fries. Reason: OK, I felt bad about April Fool'sing everybody. Changed it to real video.
